  • Notes
    • John hawkins had a brother who emigrated to Australia about the same time John Hawkins came to the United States. He started out as a sheep herder who, as the years went by became one of the biggest sheep owners in the land of Australia. He died in Australia but I don't know when. He was suppose to have left all of his holdings to my grandmother, Lilly Mae and my father Edgar James but the government had a hard time find them. When they finally found my grandmother, the state limitations had gone by or something like that. The state took over his propeerty so they lost out on that. (Family story given to James O. Hall)

On the 1871 British Census, Thomas is 20 years old and his occupation is listed as Ship Carpenter.
He does not show on the 1881 Census.

Around 1878, Thomas goes to New South Wales, Australia on the ship "Peterborough" and arrives in Sydney" The family story tell of Thomas becoming a sheep herder who over the years became one of the biggest sheep owners in the land of Australia. He was suppose to have left all of his holdings to the wife of his brother John but the government had a hard time finding them. When they did the state limitations had gone by and the state took over all his property. This theory has not been proven. Thomas became a saddler for his occupation. Thomas dies 9 October 1881. His cause of death is consumption (tuberculosis) having had it for the last 12 months. He is 31 years old. He died and was buried in Armidale Old Med Cemetery. His death certificate states he was married at 23 years old in Somersetshire, England but no information as to whom. It also states he had been in Australia for four years.
on the 1872 Grevilles NSW Directory Thomas J. is listed as a Government Appraiser, Bathurst, NSW.
